Youth Planning Charrette

Today's kids are tomorrow's community leaders.  The Pathways Plan community outreach process is an excellent chance for kids to learn about and get involved in shaping the future of the county.  Kids can provide a different outlook on what is special about our communities and what is needed.

The charrette is a series of activities designed for children from grades one through twelve.  The purpose of the activities is to provide a learning opportunity, as well as provide staff with additional feedback.

The initial charrette was conducted as part of the Cultivating Concepts Conference, held in January 2006.  However, staff continue to make the charrette available to interested classes, youth organizations, and groups.  The results of each charrette held are provided below by event or group.

For more information on how your group or class can participate in a youth planning charrette, contact Jennie Gallardy or Sandy Baber with the Carroll County Bureau of Comprehensive Planning by e-mail or by calling 410-386-2145.

Cultivating Concepts Conference

This event was held from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM on Saturday, January 14, 2006, at Carroll Community College as part of the Cultivating Concepts Conference.  Parents of children involved in the charrette were encouraged to participate in the conference.

The charrette was an opportunity for the youth to learn about planning and then use that information to create multiple projects.  Each participant began the charrette by drawing their neighborhood.  Click on the links below to see each map.

Next, the participants were given a brief overview of planning and geographic information systems (GIS).  Zoning is a large part of planning and dictates the kinds of uses that can be placed on a parcel of land and where.  A color-coded map outlining zoning districts for parcels of land can be created using GIS data.  The participating youth used that information to create new zoning maps, indicating where they felt certain uses should go.  The youth presented their zoning maps to the other participants and explained why they chose to put a zoning category where they did.  Click on the links to see each map.

The final exercise involved the participants working in groups to design an ideal neighborhood.  The purpose of the project was to allow the participants to use the knowledge learned at the charrette and apply it to a new community.  A base map with natural features was provided.  Each group came up with different ideal neighborhoods.  Click on the links to see each map.

Community Learning Alternatives Program

This event was held from 9am-11am on February 17 & 24, 2006.  This charrette was the same as the charrette held during the Cultivating Concepts Conference in Janaury.  The youth completed the same activities.  Below are the youth projects from the charrette.  Click on the link to see each map.
